by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington High School wrestling team got one wrestler into the state tournament this year.

Jason Haydon at 145 pounds placed fourth in a very competitive weight class at the Class 4A state regional meet in Mulvane. This marked the second consecutive year Haydon will be going to state to the Class 4A State Tournament in Salina which starts Friday morning.

He was pinned by Baird of Pratt at the 4:33 mark in the third-place match.

Overall it was a quiet two-day tournament for Wellington which finished 14th out of 15 teams. Wellington finished with 27 points, besting only Hesston which had 9.

Wellington had four wrestlers in the consolation semifinals which is the qualifying round to get to the state tournament. However, Anthony Heckart at 160, Chris Loughmiller at 172 and Tyson Hodson at heavyweight were beat in that round, thus ending their wrestling year. Heckart ends his wrestling career as Wellington’s lone senior.

Haydon will advance and play a top seed from another regional.

Andale, a heavy tournament favorite going in, finished with 145 points, ahead of Augusta which finished second with 128 and Mulvane with 126.

The Indians are favorites to win their second consecutive 4A state title.
