Wellington City Manager Shane Shields provides list of future projects the council will need to tackle

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — During a two-hour work session Monday, Wellington City Council members discussed possible future projects and the city’s ability to fund them.

Wellington City Manager Shane Shields presented a list of projects that the council will need to tackle in the near future.

In a nutshell, the list is long, and the funds are short.

The list precedes the start of the odious budgetary process for fiscal year 2018. The council has to approve a budget by mid-August.

Here was a list of the possible future projects, Shields brought to the council’s attention and a synopsis of what was said Monday:

1. Development  – northeast corner of Boundary and U.S. 160

Shields said developers have contacted the city about developing the property known for the infamous “Hotel coming soon” sign, north of McDonald’s Restaurant. Boundary Road (a north-south road) will need to be developed at a cost of $170,000 to $230,000 and a service road at $100,000 to $143,000.

He also said there are costs involved with electricity, water and sewer.  Those would come from negotiations with the developer. Shields did not specify what the property would be developed for except there has been on-going discussions.

2. Cowley College

Wellington girls basketball team to get 12 FREE pizzas as Big Cheese Athletes of the Week

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow —‚ This week’s Big Cheese Athlete(s) of the Week is the Wellington girls basketball team.

The Wellington girls qualified for the Class 4A State tournament at the Tony Pizza Center in Salina (same place, different name) where they will play Bishop Miege on Thursday at 8:15 p.m.

The Crusaders would beat Winfield in the Rose Hill sub-state first round on Friday, setting up the championship game between them and Rose Hill. The two teams had played on three different occasions during the regular season in which Rose Hill won twice. Two of those games went into overtime. The fourth one was a classic in which Wellington would win in the final seconds 38-35 after a 32-minute intense time of basketball.

For their effort, Big Cheese is donating a free delicious large pizzas to each 12 members of the team! Wow. When you are in need of a pizza fix, just remember that grand gesture from the local pizza restaurant at 324 N. Washington Ave.
