Marysville ends Belle Plaine’s state championship aspiration with 68-35 semifinal victory

Caleb Stover gets a bucket in second quarter vs. Marysville.

by Tracy McCue,  Sumner Newscow — The Belle Plaine Dragons have had a great run, but even they couldn’t combat the well-oiled machine that is Marysville and junior guard Gabe Pieschl.

The Dragons state championship aspirations are over after losing to Marysville 68-35 in the Class 3A semifinals at the Hutchinson Sports Center Friday afternoon.

Pieschl single-handedly scored 29 points – 25 of those in the first half helping Marysville coast to victory. Marysville never trailed in this game, leading 18-8 at the end of the first quarter and 39-18 at the half. Marysville would outscore Belle Plaine 15-6 and 14-11 in the third and fourth quarter.

The Dragons could never get in sync as Marysville dominated the boards – out rebounding Belle Plaine 44 to 16, 23 to 6 in the first half.
