Jalen Risley vs. Wallace County. (photo by Karen Shellhammer).

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — It is nearly impossible to pick a Big Cheese Athlete of the Week but after deliberation we are going to give the nod to Jalen Risley, a 6-0, 175, sophomore for the Caldwell boys basketball team.

Jalen Risley

Risley was key to Caldwell’s third place finish in the Class 1A Div. II state tournament in Dodge City last week.

He would score 9 points, six assists and 4 rebounds in Caldwell’s big 64-40 opening round victory over Axtell.

Then on Friday night, Risley was huge in the defining semifinal game with Wallace County. He would score 22 points and nab eight rebounds as the Bluejays lost a heartbreaker to the Sharon Springs based team 49-44.

Then in the third place game against Hutchinson Central Christian, Risley would go 5 of 9 for 15 points, while making seven rebounds. Caldwell would finish 22-3 for the season.

For his effort, Risley receives a FREE delicious large pizza at Big Cheese Pizza at 324 N. Washington.
