Wellington City Council decides to spend more by going local

by James Jordan, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington City Council decided to spend more to buy local at its meeting Tuesday. The council voted 5-1 to buy a half-ton pickup truck for the electric production department from Countryside Motors for $31,652.17.

Council member Kelly Hawley cast the no vote.

The lower bid was from Winfield Motors at $26,511.05.

Council member Kip Etter said that while the staff has to follow policy, and go with the lower bid, the council can make the final decision to stay local in its business dealings.

Etter said he realized it was a $5,000 difference, but there are more people employed, who are from Wellington with the local auto dealership than the one in Winfield. He added that service would also be easier with a vehicle bought from a local dealership.
