Loyal Wayne Gaskill services to be held Friday, April 14

Loyal Wayne Gaskill (Pete) died March 30, 2017.

Pete was the son of Loyal M. Gaskill and Leota Dorothea Julia Blunck Gaskill.

Loyal was the brother to six sisters, three of which are surviving along with his two sons: Darrell W. Gaskill of Wellington and Doyle A. Gaskill of Oregon.

Graveside service will be held at Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Friday, April 14, 2017 at 1 p.m. The family invites all whom would like to join in this farewell to attend.

Verla Crow, 79, Caldwell: June 7, 1937 – April 8, 2017

Verla J. Crow (Goodrick), 79, was born on June 7, 1937 in Renfro, Okla.  She died Saturday, April 8, 2017.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 14, 2017 at the Central Christian Church, 206 N Market, in Caldwell. Dr. Dan Price will officiate.

She was described by friends and family as a person loving and caring for others on earth who was always available to listen, encourage, offer assistance, and pray for anyone she encountered.

Wellington City Street Department to begin patching project on North A starting Tuesday

Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington City Street Department will begin a patching project on North “A” Street (North Highway 81) on Tuesday, April 11.

This Project will extend from 17th Street to 21st Street with northbound traffic moving through the work area. Southbound traffic will be detoured to Washington at 21st Street and able to get back on “A” Street at 17th Street.

We anticipate this work will be completed by the end of the week.

Virginia Winter, 94, Conway Springs: March 6, 1923 – April 10, 2017

Virginia Winter

Virginia C. (Ast) Winter, 94, co-founder of Spring View Manor, Inc., died Monday, April 10, 2017 at Spring View Manor, Conway Springs.

 Virginia was born March 6, 1923, to John and Elizabeth (Irsik) Ast, the ninth of thirteen children, on a farm south of Haven, KS.  She attended St. Joseph School in Ost, Kansas, and graduated from Andale High School in 1941. 

 Virginia was united in marriage to Eugene Leo Winter on August 28, 1945, at St. Joseph Church, Ost, Kansas, while Gene was home on leave during WWII.   They lived briefly in Sea Bright, New Jersey, while Gene finished his Coast Guard duty at Sandy Hook Lighthouse.  They returned to Wichita, lived briefly in Dodge City and moved to Conway Springs in September of 1949 to open the North Side Café.

Special election for U.S. Representative will be held Tuesday in Sumner County

Sumner Newscow report — The special election to determine the replacement for Kansas Fourth District U.S. State Representative Mike Pompeo will be held throughout Sumner County on Tuesday. The polling places are the same as the federal/state election. All registered voters in Sumner County are eligible to vote.

The race will be between Republican Ron Estes, Democrat James Thompson and Libertarian Chris Rockhold.

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.
