Wellington 6th graders get their hands dirty at 2nd annual ‘Pollinator’ event

by Brandon Wilmoth, Special to Sumner Newscow — The Wellington sixth graders got their hands dirty at the second annual pollinator event.  The event was sponsored by the local Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever Chapter Wheat Country.

The sixth grade team of teachers and students marched from WMS to behind the 9th Street baseball field to plant wild flowers, learn about bees, butterflies and the outdoors.

This year the team of teachers worked together to create a cross curriculum event hitting several subjects.  Before the day of the pollinator event the students had already visited the site on a Bio Blitz to study the current plant life, insects and wildlife.

In math, they measured out the plot to the correct size based on the amount of seeds ordered.  Students participated in a coloring contest of two different habitat scenes which the winner earned cold hard cash out of Mr. Wilmoth’s pocket and Regent movie tickets.
