Brock Edwards finishes ninth in 2017 Class 4A State Tournament

Sumner Newscow report — Wellington senior Brock Edwards finished ninth place in the Class 4A State Tennis tournament at Prairie Village-Harmon Park Tennis Complex in the Kansas City area.

Brock Edwards

Edwards went 5-2 in the tournament. He would beat Isaac Stringer of Parsons 6-0, 6-1 in the first round; lose to Jarrod Nowak of McPherson 6-1, 6-1; defeat Matt Schultz of Ottawa 9-0; defeat Gavin Crowe of Winfield 9-8 (6), lose to Luke Bass of Independence 9-2, defeat Jared Smart of Buhler 9-2 and defeat Payton Graves of Paola 9-4.

It was Edwards first state tournament medal after being in the big show for four consecutive seasons.

The defining moment for Edwards may have been his battle with Crowe in the consolation bracket.

Edwards fought from behind the entire match, saved a couple of match points against him and finally tied it up and 8-8, according to WHS head tennis coach Allen Keller. In the 7 point tie-breaker to determine the match, and fighting cramps, Brock again came from behind, finally tied it up at 7-7 before he strung two points together and won 9-7.
