New events headline 117th Annual Kansas Wheat Festival

Helicopter rides will be one of the new features at the Kansas Wheat Festival.

by Amber Schmitz, Sumner Newscow — There are many new activities planned for this year’s 117th annual Kansas Wheat Festival in Wellington, including a spectacular Sunday Grand Finale.

With the theme being the 150th anniversary of the Chisholm Trail, there will be an emphasis of the wild west days. Events will begin Wednesday, July 12, and end Sunday, July 16.

For the first time ever, a coloring contest will be held at the Wellington Senior Center for the first time this season, for ages 3-8. Coloring pages may be picked up at the Senior Center or Chamber of Commerce office, and must be turned into the center by July 11 at noon.

A special brew Kansas Wheat Festival beer will be served at Barefoot Jerry’s during festivities.

The Ottaway Carnival will serve a savory funnel cake in celebration of the Chisholm Trail anniversary.
