Fred Hinman is winner of the Golf Ball Drop; Lisa Carrington wins Wheat Festival Grand Prize

Fred Hinman of Wellington was ecstatic after winning the Sumner County Young Professionals’ Golf Ball Drop contest Sunday afternoon.

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Fred Hinman of Wellington has been known for going on a vacation or two. All of those paid for by Fred Hinman. This Sunday, he learned he will go someplace else on a time share program donated by J.P. Buellesfeld Financial Services Inc. as part of the helicopter golf ball drop.

Lisa Carrington was the winner of the annual Wheat Festival Grand Prize. The two winners were announced during the Wheat Festival Grand Finale at Worden Park. With that, aside from the free Wellington Aquatic Swim starting at 5 p.m. that will wrap up the 117th Kansas Wheat Festival.

Dollie Martin, 84, formerly of Argonia: June 15, 1933 – July 14, 2017

Dollie D. Martin, formerly of Argonia, died Friday, July 14, 2017 at Schowalter Villa in Hesston at the age of 84.

Dollie was born the daughter of Guy Vernon and Pearl Ellen (Draper) Newberry on Thursday, June 15, 1933 near Bluff City. On January 31, 1954, Dollie and C. Donald “Don” Martin were united in marriage at the Methodist Church in Argonia. Together they celebrated 48 years of marriage before his passing in 2002. 

Dollie retired from Horton Furniture in Wichita after a 29 year career as an office administrator. Outside of the office, she enjoyed flower gardening, cooking, and was a sports fan that followed basketball, football, baseball, and golf. Dollie was a loving person that will be missed by many.

Survivors include daughter, Terry Taggart and her husband Ernie of Wichita; daughter, Kay Javor of Huntsville, Alabama; son, Brian Martin and Cynthia Rhodes of Hesston, grandchildren: Nathan Shaw and his wife Kara, Jerod Shaw, Erik Javor, Alex Javor and his wife Pallavi, Brandi Javor, Ryan Martin, Ashley Martin, great-grandchildren: Emma, Gavin and Tessa Shaw; sister, Hazel Swingle; brother-in-law, Kenneth Martin and his wife Betty, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Grand Finale at Worden Park wraps up a great festival

Sunday, July 16, 2017:

7:30 a.m. Knights of Columbus Breakfast- 201 East Harvey. $

9 a.m. Co-Ed Sand Volleyball Tournament- McKinley Park. Registration forms at the Chamber (Sponsored by Security First Title).

10 a.m.  41st Annual Softball Tournament (If there are enough teams to keep playing)– Rock Island fields.

Noon – 3 p.m. 117th Kansas Wheat Festival Grand Finale – Worden Park – Food truck rally, tie dye event for kids, kite flying, Wellington Young Professionals Golf Ball Drop, helicopter rides and more!  Located at Worden Park 800 W. Hillside Wellington, KS 67152 (KanOkla Networks).

12 p.m. Food Truck Rally – Worden Park Come out and enjoy lunch. Many different choices.
