Sumner County administrators have been fighting the teacher shortage epidemic

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Last month during a Wellington school board meeting, Superintendent Mark Whitener breathed a sigh of relief and made this proclamation to his board members.

“We have all our regular education positions filled.”

That may be an accomplishment that can’t be understated these days especially for Sumner County schools. This summer, Sumner school administrators have become recruiters – not much different than those in charge of building college football teams.

“The application pool is smaller and there is not the quality in the pool we’ve been getting in years past,” said Alan Jamison, Caldwell Superintendent. “When it comes to special education, you simply have to go out and make phone calls.”

It’s been a trying summer for school administrators, as the seven Sumner County school districts attempt to fill their teaching “roster” before students reconvene for the 2017-18 academic year.
