Jax Cornejo wins the 2017 Sumner County spelling bee…

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Jax Cornejo, a Wellington Middle School student, spelled the word “javelin” and that made him the Sumner County Spelling Bee Champion for 2017.

There were 34 participants at today’s Spelling Bee showdown from 17 Sumner County middle and elementary schools.

Cornejo is the son of Jesse and Airily Cornejo. Second place went to Torynce Talbot of Belle Plaine Middle School.

Cornejo will now advance to Hays to participate in the state spelling bee competition sometime this spring.

Wellington’s big day….

As far as big days are concerned, it was one here in Wellington, as dignitaries from across the state of Kansas came to celebrate two big groundbreakings of projects in the works: the Wellington Airport Expansion Runway and the Cowley College-Sumner Campus.

Payton Ginter qualifies for Class 4A State tournament in girls golf

Sumner Newscow report — Payton Ginter, a Wellington High School freshman, qualified for the Class 4A State Tournament in girls golf Monday afternoon. Not a bad accomplishment for the first year of the program.

Ginter shot a 109, and placed 11th individually for Wellington at the Smoky Hills Country Club in Hays during what was a cool autumn day. The top three teams and five individuals qualify for state. Karee Dinkel of Hays was the winner with an 84 on the 18-hole tournament.

Ginter was the third lowest scorer for a freshman in the tournament behind Sophia Garrison of Hays and Jaela Albers of Andale, who both shot a 108.
