Caldwell native Max Showalter was a character actor in Hollywood, and a huge star in his hometown

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — When people go to the Wellington Regent tonight to view “16 Candles” at 7 p.m. check out one of the grandfathers of Samantha, Molly Ringwald’s character.

That grandpa would be no other than Max Showalter, a Caldwell native.

Regent is showing older movies until Hollywood releases new first-run movies in the future. 16 Candles was a classic 1984 movie that was part of a string of highly successful John Hughes teenage movies.

Showalter’s bit is small. But that was his role in Hollywood. He played in more than a thousand television shows and more than 40 films. In his obituary on July 31, 2000, of the Hartford, Conn. Courant it stated:
