The official 2020 Kansas Wheat Festival Schedule of Events… activities start tomorrow

Sumner Newscow report — The abbreviated 2020 Kansas Wheat Festival is starting tomorrow with the movie-themed sidewalk chalking contest tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can still preregister at the Chamber office before going to the Regent.

There are six events people can still register. Wheat Festival buttons are also still available at the Chamber office at Wellington Memorial Auditorium. Buttons will get you in the family movie Swiss Family Robinson at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. It will also get you into the concert at 9 p.m. Saturday.

Sumner County meeting minutes: June 29, June 30, and July 2, 2020

Sumner Newscow report — The following are the Sumner County meeting minutes for June 29, June 30, and July 2, 2020:

June 29, 2020 – 9 a.m.

The Board of County Commissioners met in regular session in the Commission Room of the Sumner County Courthouse.  Those present were Chairman John Cooney, Commissioner Steve Warner, and Commissioner Jim Newell.  Also present was Deputy County Clerk Diana Aufdengarten and 80th House Representative Bill Rhiley.

The Commission reviewed and unanimously approved the minutes of June 22 and 23.

Dannetta Cook, County Treasurer, provided the monthly report of sales tax received in the amount of $133,615.74.

George S. Harris, 90, Rockdale, Texas: March 9, 1930 – June 24, 2020

George S. Harris, age 90 of Rockdale, Texas, owner and operator of the Rock House R.V. Park near Rockdale passed away Wednesday evening, June 24, 2020 at his home.

George was born March 9, 1930, in Wellington, to George Samuel and Hazel Pearl (Myers) Harris. He worked as a land surveyor for Sedgwick County. On November 17, 1972 he and Vernie Graham were married in Haysville, Kansas. They moved to Rockdale, Texas and became the owner of Rock House R.V. Park 23 years ago. George enjoyed bowling, basketball, and most sports like the Kansas City Chiefs.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Vernie Harris on August 27, 2019; his parents; four brothers and three sisters.

Peggy A. Ledesma, 85, Wellington: July 10, 1935 – July 4, 2020

Peggy Ledesma

Peggy A. Ledesma died on Saturday, July 4, 2020, at Botkin Care and Rehabilitation in Wellington at the age of 85. She was born the daughter of Martin and Mary Connick on Tuesday, July 10, 1934 in Plattsburgh, New York. Her parents preceded her in death. Following high school, Peggy enlisted in the United States Navy eventually becoming an officer.

She was a longtime business owner that operated a popular bar in Hawthorne, California known as the “The Irish Den.” Eventually, Peggy returned to Wellington in 1985 where she has resided since. Peggy dearly loved her grandchildren and treasured anytime that she was able to spend with them.
