by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Sumner County voters returned both incumbents Sheriff Darren Chambers and County Commissioner Jim Newell for another four years after yesterday’s Kansas State Primary.

Neither candidate faces a Democrat opponent in the general election.

Chambers defeated challenger Jason Boyd 2,148 to 1,669 with 3,817 votes cast. Chambers won 56.27 percent of the vote to Boyd’s 43.72.

On the commissioner’s side, Newell had 779 votes to Hansel’s 498 for 1,277 votes in the southwest part of the county and western Wellington. Newell garnered 61 percent of the vote to 39 percent. Hansel was the former Wellington mayor. She challenged Newell who won a fifth term.

The two races, outside a couple of trustee races, were the lone competitive races.

Debra Norris was unopposed as county clerk, Dannetta Cook was unopposed as county treasurer, Jessica Anderson was unopposed as register of deeds – all Republicans. On the Democrat side, county attorney candidate Marty Keenan ran unopposed.
