Injury accident at 9-mile corner on U.S. 81, north of Wellington, Friday

Sumner Newscow report – On Friday, September 11, 2020, at 9:32 p.m., Sumner County Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to an injury accident in the 800 block of North U.S. 81 Highway, commonly known as the 9-mile corner.  When deputies arrived, both northbound and southbound lanes of traffic were blocked.  A white Toyota Sienna Van and maroon Ford F-150 pickup collided at the front passenger side of each vehicle.

The Ford F-150 was northbound and attempted to exit from U.S. 81 onto West Road.  The driver failed to yield the right of way for the southbound Toyota Van. 

Roger Farley, 67, Wellington: Feb. 14, 1953 – Sept. 10, 2020

Roger Farley died early the morning of Thursday, Sept. 10, 2020 at his home in Wellington, following a prolonged illness. He was 67.

He leaves behind his tremendously devoted wife of 48 years, Carolyn Sue Farley (nee Ybarra). She provided care and comfort to him for many years. They were married at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church on July 1, 1972.

Roger Lee Farley was born Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 1953, to Loue and Donna Farley (Foley) of rural Wellington. He was the third of their 11 children.

South Haven gives Caldwell a scare, but Jays pull away in 2nd half

Sumner Newscow report — For the first half, South Haven, a significant underdog, made this a game against their rival Caldwell to the west.

At the end of the first half, Caldwell led South Haven by a mere two points, 22-20.

But the Bluejays would score five unanswered touchdowns in the second half and would pull away to a 64-28 victory.

Caldwell would get 256 yards from Keiondre Smith and six rushing touchdowns to help secure a win for the Bluejays.

Conway Springs wins, Belle Plaine does not

Sumner Newscow report — The following is a roundup of Central Plains League games in Sumner County.

Conway Springs 44 Remington 20 

The Cardinals exploded with four first-half touchdowns en route to a relatively easy win over Remington. Conway Springs, known for its rushing attack, threw for 186 yards Friday. Heath Hilger was 7 of 13 for 186 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 109 yards and one touchdown.

Cole Schulte had four receptions for 176 yards and two touchdowns.

Conway Springs took an 8-0 lead when Hilger hit Jonathan Wright for a 4-yard touchdown pass inthe first quarter then Hilger hit Schulte on a 55 yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0. Runs by Hilger and Schulte thereafter led to a 28-0 halftime lead.  Conway Springs is now 1-1. See full stats here.
