Football hiring committee formed at WHS, interviews start soon

Wellington High School Athletic Director Brian Buchanan said a high school football hiring committee has been formed. Aside from that Buchanan is saying nothing. 

WHS girls softball team gets eliminated by Augusta

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington girls softball team was eliminated from the Class 4A Regional in Mulvane with a 7-4 loss to Augusta in the first round Monday evening.

Wellington scored two runs in the first inning and two runs in the seventh. Shanlyn Hefley was the losing pitcher.

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington boys baseball made a quick exit from the Class 4A Regional Tournament in Clearwater, losing 4-2 to Clearwater.

The Crusaders end their season at 12-9. This marks the third consecutive year Wellington has lost in the first round of a regional.

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — While the Wellington tennis team has wrapped up its season, the Crusader softball and baseball teams are embarking on regional play today.

The Wellington track team just finished its league meet, and will be preparing for the regional meet this week. 

Keller, Peck lose to Indy duo in state championship finals

(updated 4:10 p.m.) By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The incredible run of Wellington doubles partners Evan Keller and Brian Peck came to an end Saturday losing to Webster-Porsch of Independence in the Class 4A State Championship finals in Topeka.
Keller-Peck lost to the Independence duo in the third set 6-1, after winning the first set of the state championship 7-5. Wellington then lost the second set sending the match into a third game tiebreaker.

The match was a long one starting at 1:30 p.m.

Head football/track coach Dylan Schmidt resigns to take assistant coaching positions in Andale

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow—  The Dylan Schmidt era has ended before it hardly got started here in Wellington.

Schmidt, the head football and track coach at Wellington during the 2011-12 school year, submitted his resignation to Wellington Activities Director Brian Buchanan at 1:30 p.m. today, to take assistant coaching duties at Andale High School in football and track.

Andale Activities Director and assistant principal Jason Fawcett would not divulge what those specific positions will be.

Wellington baseball team to play Clearwater in first round of regional; loses to Ark City

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington Crusader baseball team will be slated as the No. 3 seed in the Class 4A Regional baseball tournament to be played in Clearwater.

Wellington (12-8) will play Clearwater (8-12) on Monday at 2:15 p.m. The full bracket is here: Class 4A Clearwater Regional Tournament bracket.

Wellington lost to Ark City Tuesday night to wrap up the regular season.

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington girls softball team will be a No. 6 seed and will battle No. 3 seed Augusta in the first round of the Class 4A Regional Softball Tournament at the Mulvane Sports Complex, Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Wellington finished with a 7-13 record, after splitting a triangular with Valley Center and El Dorado on Tuesday.

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — A newly formed Wellington double tennis team is suddenly looking like the odds on favorite to win the doubles championships in Class 4A state tournament next week.

Senior Evan Keller and Junior Brian Peck have won the Class 4A Regional Championship at Wichita Collegiate Regional this afternoon.

The Wellington duo defeated Clay Holden/Hunter Morris of Collegiate 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the championship round.

Keller/Peck, Gurley/Pettegrew reach semifinals, qualify for Class 4A in Wichita Collegiate Regional

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Four players have qualified for the Class 4A State Tournamento through to state after day 1.  Both doubles teams are guaranteed top4 finishes and both are in the semifinals starting on Friday morning at 9:30.

Keller/Peck beat El Dorado 6-0,6-0 and beat Ulysses 6-0,6-1.

Gurley/Pettegrew beat Maize South 6-2,6-0 and beat Circle 6-3,6-4.

By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington boys baseball and girls softball teams had to reschedule their games with Wichita Collegiate twice, but the wait was worth it.

Both the Wellington boys and girls swept the competition Wednesday. The boys knocked off Collegiate 11-10 and 5-1. The girls won 12-2 and 11-1 in run-rule games.

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington varsity baseball team lost to Arkansas City 9-2 in a single game at Ark City Tuesday evening.

Wellington will play Ark City again on Tuesday, May 8 at Sellers Park.

Wellington Middle School tennis team loses to Andover Central 14-11

The Wellington Middle School Boys Tennis Team hosted Andover Central yesterday.  Despite a great effort, the Knights came up a little short in team scores losing 14 to 11.  Individual winners were:

Wellington baseball/softball games postponed today will be rescheduled Wednesday; busy sports schedule ahead

The Wellington High School baseball and softball games scheduled for today against Wichita Collegiate has been postponed to Wednesday, May 3, at 3 p.m. for both varsity baseball and softball today at Sellers and Worden Park. This marks the second time the games have been postponed. They were to be played at 1:30 p.m. today

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — So much for the after-prom hangover that oftentimes affects the Wellington High School baseball team.

Traditionally, Wellington has had problems the Monday after prom weekend, but not this time. The Dukes defeated Circle 8-6 and 13-3 to improve to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV. Wellington still trails Maize South which annihilated Clearwater 17-2 and 10-0 Monday evening.

The Crusaders split with Circle, losing the first game 6-2, but winning the second 9-5 at Worden Park. Wellington is currently 3-11 and 1-5 in the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Div. IV.
