James A ‘Jim’ Woods, 71, Wellington: April 24, 1949 – June 28, 2020

James A. “Jim” Woods died on Sunday, June 28, 2020 in Wellington at the age of 71. He was born the son of Lloyd and Jeanne (Swanholt) Woods on Sunday, April 24, 1949 in Winfield.

On December 12, 1970, he and Darlene McMillin were united in marriage in Wellington. Together they celebrated 49 years of marriage. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and was discharged in 1971.

In his later years, Jim volunteered with the Kansas Honor Flight program and made the trip to Washington D.C. in 2017. He also was a member of the American Legion Post #90 Funeral Honors Team. Jim retired from Boeing Aircraft following a 30-year career as an engineer.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather that treasured anytime spent with his grandchildren. “Papa James A” never missed a ballgame and loved taking them for rides in his 1967 Ford Mustang. He will be missed by all that knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene Woods of Wellington; son, Jeremy Woods and his wife Heather of Garden Plain; grandchildren, Kaden and Brooklyn Woods of Garden Plain; brother, Jack Woods and his wife Debbie of Grenola; sister, Dena Hill and her husband Roger of Cleora, Oklahoma; step-brother, Randy Alsmyer and his wife Vivian of Russellville, Missouri; step-sister, Judy Sack of Houston, Texas; step-sister, Kathi Goetz and her husband Rick of Houston, Texas and step-mother, Mary Woods of Houston, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1 to 7 p.m., Thursday, July 2, 2020, with the family present from 5 to 7:00 p.m.

Funeral services for Jim will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 3, 2020, at the Wellington Free Will Baptist Church, Wellington. Interment with military honors will follow in Sumner Memorial Gardens, Wellington.

A memorial contribution has been established in his name with the Kansas Honor Flight. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
