Lightning strike blamed for oil tank fire southwest of Oxford… building collapses in Mulvane, Caldwell

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — They say that bad things come in threes. So was the case Sunday which kept the Sumner County Emergency Management office busy.

The first incident occurred around 7 a.m. when an oil well tank battery fire started at 60th Avenue N. and Woodlawn Road, southwest of Oxford. The oil tanks were in a remote location, and SCEM Director James Fair estimated that the fire may have started between 4 and 5 a.m. when an electrical thunderstorm blew through Sumner County.

This was the same storm in which a lightning strike hit a Catholic Church in Andale.

No hazardous materials were spilled, and loss was contained to two fiberglass water tanks, and one steel oil tank. There was no specific dollar amount to the damage incurred.

In other chaotic news:

•On Sunday morning, the front facade at the  “Set Free Dance Studio” located at 201 Main Street in Mulvane, collapsed due possibly to years of deferred maintenance on Sunday morning, Fair said.

•The back wall of a very old, abandoned building west of the Caldwell fire station in downtown, collapsed on Sunday afternoon. There were no injuries, and no estimate of cost loss. However, the building has been vacant for many, many years, Fair said.
