Sailfish finish fifth in Great Plains Swim League Finals to cap successful season

By Bliss Baird, Sumner Newscow — The Haysville Piranhas hosted the Great Plains Swim League Finals on July 12-13. The conclusion of the meet that marks the season’s end would have been sad if it had not been so exciting! The Sailfish finished fifth — edging out El Dorado and Twin Rivers.

With a small team (half the size of the champions, Winfield), Wellington’s success depends on every swimmer giving their all. Those achievements were another source of excitement at the end of each day as High Point Awards were presented to the top eight point earners in each division. With a perfect score of 27 (three first places), Jensen Lynnes tied for first among 13-14 Girls. Nash Johnsen’s first and two seconds earned him third in the 13-14 Boys division. On Saturday, the 8-and-under boys were replete with highly successful Sailfish: Owen Camblin in second and Noah McComb in sixth! Up an age group, Alara Wilson brought home the second-most points of any girl and Derex Hay the sixth most of any boy.

Although relays do not factor into high point awards, they are worth double the points of an individual race. There is a good reason, of course: assembling four stars in the same age group is not easily done. While nine of Wellington’s teams (listed below) earned points by placing in the top eight, the 5-8 Boys Medley of Ben Farley (backstroke), Noah McComb (breaststroke), Owen Camblin (butterfly), and Duke Shinliver (freestyle) scored a whopping 18 points with their first-place finish.

Shout-out to all the swimmers who trekked to Haysville in the heat of mid-July! Facing every opponent of the season on a 50 meter pool is intimidating for sure, but the team would not have done as well (and the coaches would not have had as much fun, which is the most important thing, after all) without each one of you! Way to go, Sailfish!
