Ty Wilson qualifies for Kansas Amateur Match Play Championship

Sumner Newscow report — Ty Wilson, a 2018 Wellington High School graduate and a member of the Dodge City Community College Conquistador golf team, recently qualified for the 109th Kansas Amateur Match Play Championship held at Milburn Country Club in Overland Park last week.

Ty Wilson

Wilson qualified for bracket play in the round of 64 after playing two qualifying rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday. His two scores tied him for 48th place aftger two days and were high enough to advance him to the bracket round, where he faced Nick Kagy, who is a former Dodge City Conquistador golfer.

Wilson lost to Kagy 4 and 3 in the opening round of competition. In match play, golfers keep score hole by hole. In order to score a point, the golfer has to beat the other in that particular hole. Ties don’t count. The victor is declared when he is up more points than holes left. Therefore, Kagy was up four points with three holes to play. The two players battled through the 15th hole.

Blake Saffell and Luke Scheufler also participated in the tournament, but neither qualified.

Brian Peck was the last golfer from Wellington to reach bracket play two years ago. Myles Miller was also a qualifier.

The late Bobby Dare of Wellington is a previous match play state champion.
