Wellington AD Luke Smith outlines fall season ahead… practice start-up dates… COVID sports rules

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Whether or not a full fall sports season will materialize ultimately depends on another COVID-19 outbreak. Wellington Activities Director Luke Smith held a 14-minute virtual fall sports meeting to outline what parents need to expect in the months ahead when it comes to sports.

Smith said this video is an overview of the WHS/WMS sports. Individual teams should have their own meetings leading up to the season whether that will be in-person or virtually will be left to them.


High School practice:

Football: 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the high school practice football field.

Girls tennis: 6 to 7:30 p.m., at tennis courts.

Cheerleading: 7 to 8:30 a.m., inside at the high school, outside at the football stadium,  –

Girls Golf – 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the golf course.

Dance – 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Lincoln Elementary.

Cross County – 3:30 to 5 p.m., rest of week 7:45 to 9:15 a.m. Meet at the track, pick up at 9th Street baseball field.

Volleyball – 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at WHS gymnasium.

Middle School practice:

Football: 5 to 7 p.m. at the middle school track practice field.

Volleyball: 8th grade – Aug. 17, 6:30 and 8 a.m., rest of week – 8 to 10 a.m. WMS gym. 7th grade, 4 to 6 p.m. WMS gym.

Girls tennis: 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. at the tennis courts.

Cross Country: Aug. 17 – 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. rest of week – 7:45 to 9 a.m. Meet at the track, pick up at 9th Street baseball field.

Cheer: Monday and Wednesdays, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Wellington Middle School.


Students must have four forms before participating in sports: physician physical form, concussion form, Covid-19 waivers form, and Code of Conduct – which includes high school consent to drug testing (should have been filled out during online enrollment).

Also, a one-time fee of $25 middle school/$35 high school dollars is due by the first game which covers the entire year.


•Students who are identified with symptoms from USD 353 daily screening will be sent home and not allowed to practice or participate for the day.

•Students who have been identified by the health department or a doctor’s office as having to quarantine will not be allowed to practice until released by the office.

•Students will be required to take home all equipment daily for cleaning and sanitation purposes.

•Coaches will be required to clean all school equipment used for that day.

•All students must wear masks when social distancing can not be achieved. Masks will not be used during conditioning or when the masks are wet.

•Coaches will be required to wear masks. Players on busses must wear masks. Six feet of social distancing will be required at all possible times.
