Wellington boys sweep; girls lose in heartbreakers in makeup games at Winfield

Wellington’s Therin Frame threw a one-hitter against Winfield. Here he is pitching against Augusta a week earlier.

Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington boys baseball team swept Winfield 9-0 and 9-7 Wednesday night in a make-up game at the Broadway Sports Complex. The girls softball team were not as fortunate, losing both games late 5-4.

As of the time of this writing, the home double-headers this afternoon with Mulvane are still scheduled. The boys start at 4 p.m. while the girls play at 4:30 p.m.

The Crusader baseball team improved to .500 with its second series sweep of the season. In the first game, Therin Frame threw an outstanding game for Wellington holding Winfield to just one hit in seven innings pitched. He also struck out five and faced just 21 Winfield runners at bat.

In turn, Wellington had 13 hits including Cade Phelps, who had four hits and three RBIs. For the game the Crusaders had nine RBIs and six left on base.

The two teams went scoreless until the fourth inning when Wellington got on the board with two runs. The Crusaders added six runs in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth.

The second game, the Crusaders had an outstanding top half of the seventh inning where it would crank out six runs. Wellington opened with a 1-0 lead in the top of the first which was expanded to 3-1 after three.

The Vikings would narrow the margin to one in the bottom of the fourth. Then in the sixth, Winfield produced three runs to take a 5-3 lead into the seventh.

Then Wellington went wild with six runs to regain a 9-5 advantage. Winfield added two runs in the bottom half to keep it interesting.

Chantz Daugherty was the winning pitcher for the Crusaders – allowing three hits and six walks, while striking out five. Arlis Troutman and Phelps came in relief to preserve the win.

Phelps had a triple, his second of the season. Wellington has yet to have a home run this year. Troutman doubled. The Crusaders would out slug Winfield 12-7. Lots of errors in this game. Wellington had five while Winfield had four (full stats are below).

In the girls doubleheader, Wellington lost 5-4 in game one after giving up two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Dukes were leading 4-3 when Winfield scored two runs on a double and taking advantage of a Wellington error. The Crusaders left Avery Rusk on second base in the top of the seventh to lose the game.

Winfield opened up a 3-0 lead on an A. Tate home run in the first and a Wellington error in the second. The Crusaders would score a run in the top of the third, before adding three runs in the top of the fifth, thanks to a Rusk double and Brooke McCorkle triple.

In game two, Wellington and Winfield would go to the ninth inning before Winfield won on a Tate double which brought B. Phillips home breaking a 4-all stalemate.

The Crusaders lost despite out-hitting the Vikings 11-6.

Winfield broke up a scoreless game in the third off a K. Murphy RBI single. But Wellington rolled int0 the fifth with Rusk singling, Buck tripling and McCorkle doubling. All three girls would score.

Again the bottom of the sixth led to the Crusaders demise, as they couldn’t hold onto a three-run lead. Both teams went into extra inning tied at 4-all.
