Wellington Payton Ginter wins home invite, girls golf team finishes third

Payton Ginter wins the Wellington Invitational Monday.

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Wellington senior Payton Ginter tied for first and won the tie-breaker over 33 other girls to win the annual Wellington Invitational at the local golf club Monday.

Ginter shot a 41, tied with Calley Cooper, a junior, for Buhler. She would then when the playoff on the fourth hole and was Wellington’s lone gold medalist.

The Crusaders as a whole had a great tournament finishing third. Winfield won the event with a 184. Buhler was second with a 196, Wellington 203, Circle 204, Andale 212, Andover Central 222 and Mulvane 251. 

“I believe this is the first time that’s ever happened in Wellington ladies golf history,” said Vanessa Sawyer, co-head girls golf coach. “It was a great day.”

Other Wellington scorers included.

13th – Kasiah Richmond, soph., 52.

15th (tied) – Ashley Sowersby, so., 53.

21st – Lenna Herring – so., 57.

22nd (tied) – Elly DeJarnett, so., 58.

There were three junior varsity girls who were top to medalist. Laney Dillon finished fifth with a 58, Aubrey Hunt placed sixth with 61,  Evelyn Trafecanty finished 10th with a 67, Abi Gill had a 77 for 27th.
