Wellington qualifies Meyer, Kop for Class 4A State Track meet

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Wellington had a tough outing in the Class 4A Regional track meet at Winfield Thursday, qualifying just two athletes for the state meet at Cessna Stadium next week.

Wellington’s girls finished 11th out of 16 teams while the boys placed 13th out of 15. Full results of the AV-CTL DIV Winfield Regional can be found here. Top four finishers per event advance to state.

Taylor Meyer, a sophomore from Wellington, placed third in the javelin throw. Her 122-10 distance qualified her for the Class 4A state meet. She finished behind Andale’s Katy Commons, who threw 137-10 and Andale’s Julie Archer, who had a 131-05 throw.

Chris Kop, a WHS senior, qualified in the discus with a 161-8 throw, good enough for second place behind Matthew Everett of Winfield, who threw 163-09.

In other Crusader track news: 

•Senior Jaycee Schettler had a tough day, finishing fifth in the 200 meters (28.15) and fifth in the 400 meters (1:02.61).

•Sophomore Trayson Probst was a fifth-place finisher in the javelin with a 146-04 throw.

•Senior Matthew Mason placed fifth in the pole vault- clearing the bar at 12-00.

•Kop was close to qualifying in the shot put, but placed fifth with a 46-07.5 throw.

•Overall girls performance: Andale won the meet with 147 points. Maize South had 53 for second. Wellington had 11 points.

•Overall boys performance: Andale finished first with 142. Maize South again placed second with 99. Wellington had 14 points.
