Wellington Senior Babe Ruth team finishes with 19-9 win over Watford, North Dakota

Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington Dukes finished off their Midwest Regional Babe Ruth Tournament run with a 19-9 run-rule victory over Watford, North Dakota late Saturday afternoon.

The Dukes finished 1-2 in Charleston, Mo. The Missouri Tropics and Colorado Bombers have advanced to the finals competition being played today.

Wellington dominated North Dakota smacking the ball 14 times while holding Watford to nine hits.

The Dukes opened the game on a mission taking a 5-2 lead in the first inning. Wellington expanded the lead to 7-3 after the second, North Dakota then staged a comeback and scored two runs to narrow the lead to 7-5 and then banged out four runs in the fourth to give Watford a temporary 9-7 lead. 

However, in the bottom of the fourth, Wellington rallied with five runs to give it a 12-9 advantage and never would look back. Wellington scored three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to secure the run-rule win.

Both Jack Nuss and Matt Rinehart were proficient at the plate going 3 of 4. Nuss scored five runs in the game. Nuss and Chi Barton each hit doubles.

Reliever De’Andre Washington was attributed with the win on the mound. He was the third of four Wellington pitchers. John Long pitched for two innings, Julian Jimenez followed with an inning pitched.

Washington then came in and pitched for two innings, allowing three hits, four walks while striking out three. Chi Barton pitched the final inning.
