Sumner County wheat harvest 2020 could be less than a week away, farmers optimistic about this one

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Sumner County wheat harvest 2020 is about to arrive and from the look of things, it should be an average to above-average wheat crop.

Curt Guinn, VP of agronomy for the Progressive Ag Co-op in Wellington, said he expects the Sumner County wheat harvest to start in earnest next week, perhaps, around Wednesday. Look for farmers to spot cut throughout the weekend as the wheat continues to rapidly ripen.

“I think you will see a couple of South Haven farmers start cutting around Monday. Some might even try to cut something after their Sunday lunch,” Guinn joked.

After last year’s lackluster harvest due to the flooding, there is much optimism with this year’s harvest. Last week, when the wheat head was filling during a critical stage of the maturing process, there was needed cooler weather and some moisture. Now with the wheat head established, the plant has ripened nicely in the last couple of days with high-90 degree temperatures.
