Sumner County Sheriff weekly jail bookings: Nov. 22 to Nov. 29, 2021

Sumner Newscow report — The Sumner County Sheriff Office report for Nov. 22 to Nov. 29, 2021 weekly jail bookings are as follows: 

Alleys on 200, 300 blocks of South Jefferson and South F Streets closed for gas line work

Sumner Newscow report — NPL (Utility contractor) will be completing gas line work in the alleys of the 200 & 300 blocks of South Jefferson and South F Streets beginning this Thursday for approximately two weeks. Those alleys will remain closed during their project.

Trash collection will be completed at the front curb for the residences in these areas during the time that the alleys are closed.

Any questions concerning the gas line work need to be directed to Kansas Gas Service (800-794-4780).

Edward Glenn Vohs, 73, Wellington: Oct. 8, 1948 – Nov. 25, 2021

Edward Glenn Vohs, of Wellington, died while surrounded by his family on Thursday, November 25, 2021, in Wellington at the age of 73. Edward was born the son of James and Donna (Brown) Vohs on October 8, 1948, in Colby. Edward proudly served as a Kansas State Trooper for over 25 years on the Kansas Turnpike.

He was very ornery and loved to always prank those around him. More than that, he was known for being selfless and caring and would do whatever he could to help anyone in need. Edward was a loving son, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

Marjorie Darlene Doffing, 65, Wellington: Dec., 9, 1955 – Nov. 24, 2021

Marjorie Darlene Doffing, of Wellington, died on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, at Harry Hines Memorial Hospice in Wichita at the age of 65. Marjorie was born the daughter of John and Hellen Hollingsworth (Stratton) on December 9, 1955, in Lexington, Mo. Marjorie loved her family more than anything.

She enjoyed having a house full of kids whenever she could. She was so kind and was never seen without a smile on her face which was contagious. Another one of her passions was to sew and crochet. Marjorie was also known for not being able to cook very well, a trait she passed down to her children.

Norma Irene Shelton, 90, Caldwell: Nov. 1, 1931 – Nov. 24, 2021

Norma Irene Shelton was born Nov. 1, 1931, in Bluff City, Kansas to Louis and Josephine (Turek) Walta.  She died on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021,  just 23 days after her 90th birthday.

Norma attended school thru the eighth grade and then attended a country school before coming to Caldwell High School. Following school, she went to work renting out her boarding rooms and later managing the railroad motel across the street from her rooms. Norma slept during the day but was up working all night while everyone else was sleeping.

Her son Michael Laverne Shelton was born Dec. 6, 1951, and soon became the center of her life. Mike was killed in a motorcycle accident in Dec. 1976 and Norma never got over that loss.

Wellington girls are ranked No. 8 in preseason KBCA poll

Sumner Newscow report — The Kansas Basketball Coach Association preseason classification list was released today, and it contains one Sumner County basketball team.

The Wellington girls are ranked No. 8 in the Class 4A preseason poll. They do have company from their own league. Andale is ranked No. 4 in 4A while Clearwater is No. 7. Clearwater eliminated Wellington from the sub-state championship last season. Andale, Clearwater, and Wellington are all part of the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV.

Interestingly, there is no AV-CTL Div. 3 teams. McPherson is ranked No. 2 in 4A and is a member of the AV-CTL DII.

There were no other Sumner County teams on the preseason list. The KBCA poll is as follows:
