Wellington senior Goran Djurovic is named the Big Cheese Athlete of the Week

Goran Djurovic after scoring a touchdown against El Dorado.

By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Goran Djurovic, a Wellington senior, has been named Big Cheese Athlete of the Week.

Goran Djurovic

Djurovic, a 5-7, 230, sr.), got to do something most offensive linemen only dream of — scoring an 11-yard touchdown run in last Friday’s 46-0 victory. It came at the 2:11 mark of the second quarter on a lineman eligible.

Djurovic is one of the few starters playing both ways for the Crusaders. He is listed on Maxpreps as a defensive tackle and offensive center. He has six tackles this season, excluding game one, which he missed due to a concussion.

For his efforts, Djurovic is the recipient of a large, delicious Big Cheese Pizza at 324 N. Washington.

Wellington Humane Society Pet of the Week is Alexis

Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington Humane Society Shelter Pet of the Week is Alexis!

Alexis came to the Wellington Humane Society as a scared young mother with her three kittens. She was an incredible mama who did everything she could to care for her babies, but sadly, all three of her kittens passed away over the following few months.

Then Alexis took in a fourth kitten who had lost his own mom when he was just a few weeks old. She lovingly stepped in and became the mama he needed. He turned out to be her only surviving kitten, and the two of them were the cutest little pair!

Unfortunately, losing kittens is far too common for cats who have spent their lives on the streets without the proper nourishment, vaccinations, and veterinary care that a cared-for domestic cat receives. As Alexis began to feel safe, WHS officials got to see her sweet personality shine. She quickly learned to trust people and showed us what a loving girl she truly is.

The Board of County Commissioners met in regular session in the Commission room of the Sumner County Courthouse.  Those present were Chairman Jim Newell, Commissioner Steve Warner, and Commissioner John Cooney. Also present were Deputy County Clerk Diana Aufdengarten and Steve Richey.

Maintenance Director Jimmy Thornton met with the Commission regarding a concern that the carpet in the Raymond Frye complex needs to be replaced.  After discussion, there isn’t a budget at this time. However, Director Thornton is going to go ahead and get an estimate just to have an idea of the price when it is time to replace.

Wellington school board still mum after two executive sessions in two weeks

By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow – The Wellington school board held 45 minutes of executive sessions Tuesday evening during a special meeting at the Wellington School Administrative Office. The agenda said there were two unrelated topics covering three executive sessions. The third executive session, scheduled for 15 minutes, dealt with “contract language and employment status concerning non-elected personnel.”

No action was taken after the third executive session. There was also no comment.

This marks the second consecutive special meeting in which the board has taken no action or made no comment after a non-elected personnel executive session. The board met for 45 minutes on Monday, Sept. 22, and did not comment thereafter.

Wellington USD 353 administration announced on Friday, Sept. 18, that Wellington head coach Jeremiah Meeks would not be coaching the Wellington-Andale football game. Wellington assistant coach Ryan Jenkins acted as the interim coach. The status has remained the same with Jenkins as the acting coach in the following game with El Dorado last Friday. The current status of the coaching for the game this Friday between Wellington and Mulvane remains the same.

At no point has the school administration or school board used the word “suspended.”

Greg Rohrer, 78, formerly of Caldwell: Nov. 19, 1947 – Sept. 27, 2026

Greg Rohrer

Gregory Alan Rohrer of Wichita, formerly of Caldwell, died peacefully on September 27, 2026, at his home in Wichita, at age 78—likely leaving behind a few witty remarks and many fond memories.

He was born November 19, 1947, in Caldwell, the son of Athol Reginald and Anna Mae (Lebeda) Rohrer. Raised in Caldwell, Greg attended elementary school in Wellington and graduated from Caldwell High School. Well-known for his trademark orneriness, sharp tongue, and quick wit, Greg was never one to bite his tongue or miss an opportunity to crack a joke. Following graduation, he put his work ethic to use at Wichita ADT, where he stayed for 20 years, before bringing his signature humor to U.S.D. 259 for another two decades, retiring at age 62.

Front Porch Tuesday: Where we live and where we work

By Stacy Davis, Sumner County Economic Development Commission —  Every weekday morning, vehicles pull out of driveways across Sumner County.

Some head toward Wichita. Others travel to neighboring counties or cross the state line. At the same time, workers from outside Sumner County are driving into our communities to teach in our schools, care for patients, manufacture products, serve customers and keep local businesses operating.

We see the traffic, but we may not always think about the economic story behind it.

The U.S. Census Bureau calls this worker inflow and outflow. In plain language, worker inflow is the number of people who live outside Sumner County but work here. Worker outflow is the number of Sumner County residents whose jobs are located somewhere else.

Kerwin Spencer, Larry Gerwick named honorees of the Kansas Babe Ruth Leagues, Inc. Hall of Fame

Kerwin Spencer

Larry Gerwick

Sumner Newscow report — The Kansas Babe Ruth Leagues, Inc. inducted two new members on Saturday, September 26 at Derby.  The two honorees were Kerwin Spencer of Wellington and Larry Gerwick of Mulvane.

Kerwin Spencer

For any organization to be successful, it must have individuals who give selflessly, believe in the organization’s goals, and are dedicated to achieving them.  Those characteristics have been demonstrated by Kerwin since he joined Kansas Babe Ruth Baseball.

Spencer’s involvement began as a player for the Oxford team in the Wellington Babe Ruth League from 1969 to 1972.   He was an assistant coach for that team from 1975 through 1978, when his father, Alfred, was the coach and his brothers, Brent and Brian, were players.

Wellington to host Andale tonight in volleyball with league title on the line

By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington girls volleyball team has accomplished quite a bit over the years. The one thing the Crusaders haven’t done is win an Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV title.

The Crusaders will host Andale tonight at 4:30 p.m. in Wellington for a chance at winning the league title. Both teams go into the match undefeated in league play as the first half of a triangular. The Crusaders will then play Rose Hill in the second match around 6:30 p.m.

A win here and Wellington will have clinched at least a tie for the league title (providing it takes care of Rose Hill later tonight). If it loses here, it won’t be the end of the world, but it will make it very difficult to win league. Wellington will play Andale again up there next Tuesday.
