Wellington dominates Fort Scott 34-13 to improve to 5-2

By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — On a cool October night in Fort Scott, Wellington dominated its southeast Kansas host with a convincing 34-13 victory.

The Crusaders are now 5-2 with a home game against Rose Hill next week to wrap up the regular season.

Currently, though, the Crusader Nation is holding its breath, as Colton Elmore was injured on defense while making a touchdown-saving tackle late in the game. Wellington head coach Ryan Jenkins said he doesn’t know his quarterback’s status but hopes to learn more shortly.

Belle Plaine looks for first win against a foe it beat 3 years ago

By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow – The following is a preview of Sumner County football games tonight outside Wellington:

Leon-Bluestem (1-5) at Belle Plaine (0-6)

It was Oct. 6, 2023. Belle Plaine defeated Leon-Bluestem 39-14. Since that point, Belle Plaine has not won, losing 27 straight games. Tonight, Belle Plaine could very well end this streak once and for all against the same team.

Bluestem has struggled this season, getting its lone win against Western Kansas opponent Syracuse 22-6. It also lost to Eureka in overtime 22-16. Last week, it fell to Sedgwick, another one-win team, 33-22. This is a very winnable game for Belle Plaine, which has certainly looked improved this season after playing Douglass and Medicine Lodge within a touchdown.

The two teams did not play one another in 2024 or 2025. There’s a lot of history here for two programs that have generally struggled. In 2008, for instance, Leon-Bluestem broke a multi-year losing streak by beating Belle Plaine 12-8. Perhaps history will repeat itself; this time, the Dragons will break a long losing streak and beat Bluestem.

2 independent candidates for Kansas House try to capitalize on ‘hunger’ for alternatives

Editor’s note: The following is a reprint from the Kansas Reflector, an Internet news website that covers the Kansas State Legislature.

———

By Morgan Chilson, Kansas Reflector — The November election will determine whether two independent candidates’ refusal to stand with Democrats or Republicans earns them a Kansas House seat.

Jack Geiger, an organic farmer and self-described former “conservative Democrat” from Brown County, is running against incumbent Republican Rep. Sean Willcott to represent a north-central district that includes Brown and Nemaha counties, and portions of Jackson and Atchison counties.

Lex Goff, a Wellington resident who graduated high school in May, is running against four-term incumbent Republican Rep. Bill Rhiley to represent the district south of Wichita in Sumner County and part of Cowley County.

There is no Democrat in either race.
