KSHSAA releases its annual classification list for 2022-23… Wellington to host tennis regional
Sumner Newscow report — The Kansas State High School Activities Association released its annual classification list for 2022-23. This is for all other sports except football. The football classification list is released bi-annually during the odd years.
All Sumner County schools remained the same. Wellington is in Class 4A. Belle Plaine and Conway Springs are in Class 2A. Argonia, Oxford, South Haven, and Caldwell will be in Class 1A. The KSHSAA did not divide the schools into divisions 1 or 2 yet, but Oxford will be in Div. 1 as it is the second largest school in 1A, while Argonia is headed to Div. 2 with its 46 students as one of the smallest schools in the states. Caldwell and South Haven are in the middle with 64 and 51 students respectively and could flip either way.
Wellington had 485 students registered from Freshman to Senior year, up from 462 in 2021-22. Wellington and Rose Hill have had almost identical enrollment rates. Last year both schools had 462. This year Rose Hill has 488 while Wellington has 485.
The full classification list can be found here.
In other news, Wellington was selected to host a Class 4A Regional Tennis Tournament at Sellers Park on Saturday, Oct. 8. The schools participating are: Augusta, Buhler, El Dorado, Pratt, Towanda-Circle, Wellington, Wichita Trinity and Winfield.
The good news for the Wellington girls’ tennis team is Collegiate is in Class 3-2-1A. But Conway Springs probably isn’t happy about it because the Spartans are in the Cardinal regional. Teams in the Conway Spring regional include Chaparral, Columbus, Conway Springs, Haven, Hutchinson-Trinity Catholic, Kiowa-South Barber, Neodesha, Wichita Collegiate, Wichita-Central Christian Academy, Wichita-Classical School Of Wichita, and Wichita-The Independent.
