Marcine Goodrum retires from Wellington Rec Center after 26 years

by Amber Countryman, Sumner Newscow — Marcine Goodrum was in charge of the art programs when she first began working at the Wellington Recreation Center 26 years ago. In her retirement, she was the assistant superintendent and art director.
“The art programs were in place when I started, and we have added to them over the years,” Goodrum said.
Over the years, the adult art program has grown from just stained glass benches and bird baths to include pottery, memory scrapbooks, glass fusion classes, and painting classes.
“The youth arts program used to include a summer playground, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.,” Goodrum said. “Since then, we now have camps that are more specialized, such as cooking contests, Lego camps, and science sessions.”
Goodrum has also assisted with the fitness classes, planning their activity brochures three seasons a year, advertising and programs, budgets, and special events, helped with the website and board meetings.
“We are like so many other businesses. Everybody helps each other out,” Goodrum said. “It certainly has never been boring!”
In 2015, a new fitness center and additional offices were built.
“It was wonderful because we were using the Elsass art house south of the Rec, but it is so handy to have everything under one roof,” said Goodrum.
Goodrum’s favorite part of her job was the arts program.
“I loved coming up with new ideas for programs and special events,” Goodrum said.
A retirement reception was held in her honor Friday, Aug. 26 in the Wellington Recreation Center community room. Goodrum’s husband, Mark, provided all of the refreshments at her reception.
“His passion is cooking,” Goodrum said. “He’s quite the chef!”
Also retiring, for the second time, is Maria Holverson. She has been the Wellington Rec Center’s custodian for 21 years.
“Between the two of us, we have 47 years at the WRC,” Goodrum said.
Goodrum plans to relax and enjoy life.
“I plan to relax, enjoy life, visit more with friends and family, painting, do day trips, and probably updates around the house (notice that is last!),” Goodrum said.
