Michael Edgington

Sumner Newscow report — Michael Eugene Edgington, 24, of Wellington, has been charged with murder in the second degree (reckless) – a level 2 felony for the shooting death of 25-year-old Sydney Lea Ann Palmer.

Sumner County District Judge William Mott set his bond at $500,000 during a Zoom meeting hearing at Sumner County Courthouse this afternoon. He is currently in Sumner County Jail.

Edgington is accused of killing Palmer during an argument on July 3 at 1316 North A Street in Wellington. He allegedly brandished and fired a gun at the victim, who was threatening to throw a small figurine at him, according to the complaint.

Sydney Palmer

Palmer was a mother of three children. Her funeral service will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Freewill Baptist Church. Her full obituary can be found here.

If Edgington posts bond either with cash or a surety bond through a bondsman, he will have GPS monitoring, not to leave Sumner County, report for weekly court services, and no possession of firearms.

His next scheduled hearing will be July 13 at 9 a.m. to give the defendant time to hire an attorney or fill out the application for a court-appointed attorney.

On Monday at about 1:30 p.m., Wellington officers responded to the reported shooting. Upon arrival, an officer discovered that Palmer had suffered a single gunshot wound to the upper chest, according to Wellington Police Chief Tracy Heath. Wellington EMS responded to the scene and subsequently transported Palmer to Wesley Medical Center in critical condition. She later passed away from her injuries, according to Heath.
