By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Wellington had little trouble destroying El Dorado 46-0 Friday night under the new Friday Nights Lights at John Gifford Field on homecoming.

Wellington led 39-0 at the half and added a touchdown in the third before lightning and rain stopped the game at the 9:53 mark of the fourth.

The Crusaders are now 3-1 with a date at Mulvane next Friday. It won’t be this easy next Friday.

Jon Armstrong ran for 76 yards and 53 more passing.

Wellington’s defense stifled El Dorado’s offense, holding the Wildcats to -49 yards. Yes, there is a negative before that 49. The Wildcats had just one first down, and that came because of a Wellington facemask penalty.  Skyler Demel, El Dorado’s beleaguered quarterback, threw for just 20 yards.

The Crusaders scored touchdowns on all but two possessions in the first half. Wellington failed to score on its first possession, turning the ball over on downs, and then right before the half on a missed 39-yard field goal.

Quarterback Colton Elmore continues to rack up the yards, throwing for 238 and rushing for 37 yards. Perhaps the big highlight of the night was lineman Goran Djurovic with an 11-yard tackle eligible touchdown run in the second quarter.

The most notable highlights were the new lights and the sound system thanks to the generous donation of an anonymous donor.  It gave the football game a concert-like feel. When Wellington entered the stadium to start the second half, the lights flashed neon red and white in sync with the music.

Jackson Curry had two touchdown receptions vs. El Dorado.

The Crusaders led 15-0 after the first quarter when Vohn Williams ran in from the 6 at the 4:22 mark. That was followed by a fumble recovery in the end zone after El Dorado fumbled the snap – not once but twice on consecutive plays.

In the second quarter, Wellington romped. Elmore connected with Elder on a 22-yard touchdown throw early in the second. That was followed by an Elmore-to-Jon Armstrong 52-yard touchdown pass. What was unique about that play was Elmore had lost the ball and picked it up and threw to Armstrong, who broke loose for the score.

Elmore then connected with Jackson Curry for a 34-yard TD before Djurovic got his first career touchdown. In the third quarter, another Elmore-to-Curry TD, this one for 42 yards, secured the win.
