100 years ago: Three men steal 21 cases of whiskey, and Prohibition hadn’t been enacted yet

Sumner Newscow report — In early December, three young men were being transferred to Wichita from the Wellington Jail to face federal burglary charges. The three men were accused of stealing 21 cases of whiskey from a railcar parked in the rail yard.  The article noted the three had signed confessions, “so there was no doubt to their guilt.”

The Sante Fe Railroad had asked that they be charged in U.S. Federal Court and so they were being taken to Wichita for that reason and away from Wellington. Prohibition was right around the corner, though. 1920 was when the U.S. made the sale of alcohol illegal.
