Wellington girls set to wrestle in the Class 4A State Tournament in Salina tomorrow
By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington girls will bring the largest Crusader contingency in history to the Class 4A State Wrestling Tournament tomorrow at Salina’s Pizza Center. The wrestling festivities begin at 9 a.m.
Brackets have been assigned with eight girls set to wrestle for the Wellington red: London Pourner at 100, Aubri Rohrer at 110, Caroline Mott at 115, Maddie Fullerton at 230, Mikayla Ybarra at 145, Kaylee Horinek at 150, Maddy LeValley at 190 and Natalie Burnett at 235.
Here is an interesting tidbit. Wellington has more wrestlers who qualified for tomorrow’s 4A tournament, than every school but one.
The event will last over two days and will be double elimination. Here’s what to expect for each wrestler. Full brackets can be found here.
Pourner — The sophomore, at 21-12, will be one of the first wrestling matches of the tournament as a 10th seed. She will immediately wrestle Audry-Johnson-Wood of Santa Fe Trail, ranked No. 6 in the state at 100. Win there and it is a probable date with Hannah Noel of Columbus, the No. 2 seed. Tough draw.
Rohrer — The sophomore 110 pounder, 16-16, comes in as a 10th seed and will battle Sophie Waters of Meriden-Jefferson West, who is 33-5 and ranked No. 6. She too would see a No. 2 seed in the second round if she were to win the first round.
Mott — The sophomore will wrestle the top seed in the first round at 115. She will battle Jerri Smith, a sophomore, from Fort Scott, who is ranked No. 2 in the latest KWCA poll.
Fullerton — Wellington’s 130 pounder has a good chance of making significant noise in this tournament despite being the No. 11 seed going in. She will wrestle sixth seed Skyy Hepler of Paola (25-7) in the first round. Win there and she will likely wrestle Wendy Candia of Pratt, undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the state. Fullerton is currently ranked No. 4 in the latest KWCA poll.
Ybarra — The junior, at 20-11, is the No. 15 seed in the state and will immediately have her hands full against Kendall Baird of Santa Fe Trail, who is 28-14 and the No. 2 seed.
Horinek — The Wellington senior at 170, at 18-10, battles Alyssa Bartlett of Paola, 25-12, in the first round. Horinek is an 11th seed.
LeValley — The junior at 190, at 19-9, should have an exciting match to open the tournament as the eighth seed. She will be wrestling Adalynn Hutto of Columbus, 25-11, who is a ninth seed. The winners there will meet Ali Simhiser of Fort Scott, the No. 2 ranked wrestler in 4A.
Burnett — The 235-pound junior comes into the tournament as Wellington’s highest-seeded wrestler in the first round. She is the fourth seed and will wrestle Ryan Bretthauer, a Eudora senior, at 21-8. Burnett has a lot of up potential going into this tournament. She is ranked No. 2 in the latest KWCA poll, trailing only Clara Rawson, a senior, from McPherson.
