Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington Duke of Wellington ceremony is tonight. Five candidates for the 2021 event will be Colin Green, Kade Adams, Berkeley Wright, Tanner Meyer and Rayce Koerner.

The crowning will take place between the Wellington-El Dorado boys and girls basketball games at about 7:15 p.m.

The basketball games schedule is as follows:

C games at 4:15, JV boys at 5:45, V girls at 6, V boys and JV girls at 7:30.

The 2020 Duke will be crowned between the varsity girls and boys games at approximately at 7:15 p.m.  The school will still have to follow the capacity restrictions, so people will need to be signed up on the pass list to get into the gym.

WHS basketball, band, cheer, and dance teams will get four fans per person.  The Duke candidates and child escorts will also get four fans per person, and the visiting team will get two fans per person.

“This will put us at capacity for this event and Wellington will not have any extra spots to give out,” Smith said.

Mask and social distancing will be required. Families may sit together as household units but should be six feet from others.  Masks should be worn at ALL times in the school.  This event will be live-streamed on the Wellington High School NFHS network: https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/schools/wellington-high-school-wellington-ks

“As always, we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but appreciate your help and cooperation in making this event a success,” Smith said.
