2021 Wheat Harvest update: Farmers are expecting 50 bushel an acre wheat
by James Jordan, Sumner Newscow — The wheat harvest in Sumner County is getting started and it looks good so far.
In May agriculture officials were predicting a very good crop. With the recent warmer weather and sunshine, that prediction seems to be coming true.
At the Caldwell Coop they are expecting their first truckload of wheat Saturday, and they expect it to get very busy starting Monday.
They are projecting 50 bushels per acre.
The U.S. Wheat Association is projecting a 17 percent increase in the harvest in Kansas over last year.
The USDA is reporting 53 percent of the crop is good and 12 percent excellent. The coloring is a bit behind, which accounts for starting to harvest a little later than average. Even so the harvest started at about this time last year in Sumner County.
A test cut in Cowley County, north of Arkansas City, yielded 57 bushels per acre with a test weight of 62 pounds.
In some western areas of the state, and parts of western Sumner County, drought conditions have hampered the yield to some extent. There have also been some rust issues that may also affect the yields. But for the most part a good crop is expected across Sumner County.
