3 injured in south lane Turnpike accident after Freightliner drifts into side barrier wall before hitting transit van
Sumner Newscow report — The Kansas Highway Patrol released its official report from this morning’s accident in the southbound lane of the Kansas Turnpike at Mile Post 29.6.
This morning at 9:12 a.m. a two-vehicle accident involving a semi-truck and a Ford transit van occurred just south of the mile post 29.6 bridge in the southbound turnpike lane, about two miles south of the Kansas Star Casino.
Ali Abbas, 33, of Henrico, Va., was driving a 2020 Freightliner semi when he drifted into the closed portion of the roadway, struck the barrier protection and then the barrier wall in the construction zone. The truck then struck a 2016 Ford Transit van driven by Rafael Soto-Hernandez, 35, of Wichita, according to the report. 
Abbas had suspected serious injuries and was taken to an unspecified hospital. Soto-Hernandez also received suspected serious injuries and was taken to Wesley Hospital.
Adrian Nunez, 39, a passenger in the transit van, was also taken to Wesley Hospital for suspected serious injuries.
The Kansas Turnpike was closed for a significant length of time and traffic was rerouted on U.S. 81 and went through Wellington. A Street was congested for about two to three hours from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
