3 Sumner Republicans on list breaking party ranks to support Democrat Paul Davis for Governor
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Democrat challenger Paul Davis on Tuesday gave his campaign for Kansas governor a bipartisan boost by announcing the endorsements for more than 100 moderate Republicans who has split with conservative GOP Governor Sam Brownback over education and tax policy. Three of the 103 people listed as “Republicans for Kansas Values†are from Sumner County.
Former Speaker of the House Robert Miller of Wellington was one of the 103 people listed on the davisforkansas.com web site, who have broken from their Republican party to endorse Davis on the Democrat side. Former South Haven School Board member Jay Zimmerman and current South Haven school board member Glennis Zimmerman were also on the list.

Davis’ campaign staged a news conference at a Topeka hotel with 40 of the disaffected Republicans.
Miller represented the former 80th District in the Kansas State House of Representatives from 1971 to 1996. He was the Kansas State House of Representatives Majority Leader, the Kansas State House of Representative Speaker, The Kansas House of Representative Minority Leader; the Sumner County GOP Chairman from 1971 to 1980 and the Kansas Young Republican Chair from 1971 tot 173.
Miller is the only person in the state’s history to serve as a majority leader, minority leader, and speaker of the house.
Jay Zimmerman was a South Haven school board member for 20 years, Grains member and director from 2005-2008, Kansas Grain Sorghum Commissioner from 2002-2008 and 2014-present, Jackson Township Treasurer from 2009-present.
Glennis Zimmerman has served on the South school board from 2009 to the present; and the Sumner County Leader Initiative President from 2013 to the present. She is a former assistant superintendent at the Wellington and Winfield school districts.
