Wellington girls tennis team finishes off busy 2 days with success

Crusader head logoSumner Newscow report — It has been a busy two days for the varsity girls tennis team. The Lady Crusaders went to Kingman on Tuesday and placed second as a team behind Buhler out of six teams.

No. 1 singles Abby Lowe continued with her solid season going 3-0 on the day good for first.  Her first two matches she won over Kingman 7-2 and Nickerson 7-2.  In the finals she beat White from Buhler.  Lowe is now 18-8 on the year heading into league and regionals.

No. 2 singles was Madison Lewellen who cruised in her pool play matches winning 7-0 over Nickerson, and 7-0 over Valley Center.  In her final match she dropped it to Mann from Buhler 4-7, to finish second overall.

No. 1 doubles Mekenna Adams and Kylie Aufdengarten won over Nickerson 7-0, but then dropped their second match to Valley Center 4-7.  This put them against Kingman and the pair won 7-1 to take third.

At No. 2 doubles the same type of thing happened where Lauryn Snipes and Avery Rusk won their first match over Nickerson 7-0, then dropped a 4-7 match against Buhler.  In their final match they won 7-0 over Haven to finish third also.

On Wednesday, the team traveled to Circle for a makeup meet.  Playing No. 1 singles was Lexi Saffell who was seeded fourth overall out of six players.  Lexi won her opening match 8-4 over Dashner from El Dorado.  Then she played state medalist Fugit from Andover Central and lost 1-8.  In her final match Saffell played the #2 seed White from Buhler and won 8-4 to take 3rd.  Lexi did very well today that Buhler match was a good win.

Madison Lewellen played No. 2 singles and won her opener 8-1 over Taylor from Neodesha.  She then dropped a heartbreaker to Wicks from Circle in a tiebreak.  In her final match she lost to Page from Andover Central which placed her fourth.

One of the other highlights of the day was the No. 1 doubles team of Mekenna Adams and Kylie Aufdengarten.  The pair got the No. 3 seed and won their opening match over Circle 8-1.  In their next match they had to play a Andover Central team that has had a great season so far. Wellington took the lead and kept it close then won 8-5.  In the finals they played a familiar opponent in Buhler.  Buhler beat Wellington 8-2 in the first meet of the year.  This time the tides turned and Adams and Aufdengarten won 8-5 to win the championship.

“It was good to beat them finally at No. 1 doubles,” said Brian Aufdengarten, Wellington head tennis coach. “We haven’t beaten them in about six years.”

At No. 2 doubles Lauryn Snipes and Avery Rusk lost their opening match to Andover Central 5-8.  The pair then had a bye and then beat El Dorado 8-1 to finish third overall.

“It was nice to bring home several medals in the last two days,” Aufdengarten said.

League tennis is next Monday at Buhler and regionals at Pratt next Friday and Saturday.
