Semi-truck with hazardous material overturns, south of Wellington on U.S. 81

— Sumner County Sheriff Deputies and Wellington Fire and EMS were dispatched at 4:58 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8 to the 300 block of south U.S. 81 for a truck tractor overturned in the west ditch, south of Wellington.

Sheriff’s Deputy Colin Crosby arrived on scene at 5:04 a.m. and observed an overturned truck tractor with liquid trailer, marked hazardous materials, overturned in the west ditch. The tank was carrying ethanol, but did not rupture.

According to the accident report, the driver, Jesse Stewart, 63, of Norman, Okla., driving an LLC Transport INC semi truck, was southbound on U.S. 81 when he came upon a deer in the roadway. Stewart maneuvered to the right and got a portion of his truck tractor tires in the ditch.

The weight of the liquid ethanol shifted to the right, causing the truck and the load to be drug into the ditch. The entire assembly overturned, causing damage to the trailer and power unit.

Stewart was seen by EMS and refused treatment of bruises and a bloody nose.

Strickland Towing was called to the scene to remove the truck tractor and trailer.
