Wellington teams finish Cheney tournament with wins; Caldwell boys, Argonia girls take Border Queen…
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Preseason tournament week is over, and there was plenty of excitement. Here is what was played on the basketball court Friday and Saturday for Sumner County teams.
Cheney Tournament
Saturday: Wellington boys 64 Chaparral 59
The varsity Crusaders won their first game of the season Saturday afternoon. Ian King led Wellington with 23 points while A.J. Snipes had 20.
Chaparral opened with a 13-7 first quarter lead but Wellington took a 25-24 lead at the half.
The Roadrunners regained the lead with a 21-18 output in the third. In the fourth, Wellington outscored Chaparral 21-14 to pick up the five point win.
The Crusaders staved off 28 points from Quinton Pfaff.
King and Snipes were named to the Cardinal Classic all tournament team.
Wellington hosts Andale in its Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV opener Tuesday. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.

Wellington girls 45 Chaparral 28
Wellington rebounded from its Thursday loss to Cheney with a 17-point win Saturday. The Crusaders led 15-8 in the first quarter and held a 24-13 advantage at the half.
The Roadrunners outscored the Crusaders 8-5 in the third. But Wellington then outscored Chaparral 15-7 in the fourth for the victory.
Avery Rusk was the leading scorer with 14. Shayland French had 12 and Taylor Meyer 11.
French and Rusk made the all tournament teams.

Caldwell Border-Queen Tournament
Caldwell boys 60 Norwich 30
Host Caldwell dominated Norwich to capture the 2017 Border-Queen Tournament Championship. Caldwell led Norwich 22-4 and coasted to a win. Corbin Rice led all scorers with 20. Jalen Risley had 15 and Justin Brown 12.
On Friday, the Bluejays defeated Central 63-18.
Argonia boys 54 Central 46
Red Raiders finished the Caldwell tournament 0-3, losing to Central 40-36. In the game Friday, Norwich won 44-19.
Argonia girls 54 Central 46
The Red Raiders swept by Norwich 43-33 and Central 54-46 to win the Border-Queen Classic. Argonia led 16-12 at the end of the first quarter against Central and 25-16 at the half en route to victory.
Argonia was led by C. Vineyard with 17 points and Booker had 13.
Caldwell girls 35 Norwich 29
The Bluejays had seven scorers but none got in double figures. Tylyn Ward was the leading scorer with 8. Caldwell defeated Central on Friday 53-21.

Udall Tournament
CV-Dexter boys 54 Oxford 51 (2 OTs)
Attica 65 Oxford 42
Oxford played two games in two nights and fell to 2-2. On Friday, the Wildcats played a doozy losing in double overtime. Camren Clements hit eight 3-pointers, tying a single game school record for 3-pointers.

Kingman 41 Conway Springs girls 38. Conway Springs girls are 2-2.
SCA 71 Conway Springs boys 58.
Kingman 61 SCA 54 – Conway Springs boys are 1-3.
