Wellington baseball/softball teams win big in final regular season games

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — In a couple of makeup games, the Wellington baseball and softball teams finished the regular season with sweeps against El Dorado.

In other news, South Haven finished third in the South-Central Border League Tournament and Oxford placed fourth.

In Wellington if there ever were an irrelevant set of games during the season, this was it. The regional pairings had already been set, Senior Day ceremonies had already taken place, and this had no bearing on league standings. But it was good to get wins to head into the all-important regional tournaments starting Monday.

The Wellington girls defeated El Dorado 4-3 and 6-5 in two closely played games. Game one ended in a walk off single by McKenna Jones in the bottom of the seventh.

Wellington had 10 hits to El Dorado’s seven. Avery Rusk, Jones and Jacelyn Buck had multiple hits.

Brooke McCorkle, in the circle, allowed seven hits, walked one while striking out six.

In the nightcap, Wellington broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fifth when Gracie Fink ripped off a home run with one runner on base. Earlier in the at bat, another had previously stole home. Leading 5-2 going into the sixth, Wellington sustained its lead the rest of the way.

Annika DeJarnett pitched Wellington to victory. In six innings, she allowed two runs on seven hits and didn’t have a walk. McCorkle threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen, retiring El Dorado for the inning to preserve the win after the Wildcats scored two runs to start the top of the seventh.

Both El Dorado and Wellington committed five errors in the game.

Wellington finishes the regular season 10-10.
