4 — Oxford boys playing for SCBL Championship.
The Oxford boys appear to be heading for a one-on-one, winner-takes-all showdown vs. Central Burden on Friday. Both teams are 6-1, and the winner will sit alone at the top.
Oxford picked up a huge 67-64 win last Friday vs. West Elk to set up the Oxford-Central matchup. The game came down to one possession and Oxford made the stop. Four Oxford players finished in double figures including: Cordell Jordan 16, Zane Whitson 15, Kellen Green 10 and Tucker Ruyle 10.
West Elk was led by Garret Usry with 20, Maddex Moreno 18, and Kase Kill 11.
It was quite an emotional moment for Kyle Green, who coached against West Elk’s Dave Miller, who will be retiring from coaching after 19 years. Green states:
“For the past 19 years that I’ve been the HC at Oxford, Dave Miller has been the HC at West Elk. Our teams have had some absolute battles over the years, Oxford vs West Elk has always been my favorite games in the league or league tourney. Dave is retiring at the end of this season, and tonight was the last time I’ll ever get to share a sideline with him as the Wildcats play the Patriots. Coach Miller is not only a first class coach and teacher, he’s a first class human being. He and I have had some of the best conversations and he’s supported me in some of my toughest.
He’s easily one of my closest friends, that will always be the case. I’m going to miss him in the coaching world. The job he’s done at West Elk high school is amazing. You can’t have a conversation about Patriot basketball and it not start with Coach Dave Miller. I’m blessed to have been able to coach against him but even more blessed to call him my friend.”
5 — Wellington wins powerlifting tournament.
Wellington won both the high school boys’ and girls’ powerlifting meet held on Feb. 3.
The high school girls dominated with 380 points while Wichita East finished second with 181 and South Sumner had 118.
The high school boys also dominated, getting 368 points, while Kapaun had 179 and Maize 143.
