5 sporting things: WHS softball rescheduling, WHS baseball team sweeping… and more

High school softball — The weather gods forced us into our first spring postponement. Wellington and Rose Hill were set to play at Worden Park. But due to Thursday’s rain, the fields were too wet to play. The game has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 11. Wellington is currently 2-2 for the season.

High school baseball — The Wellington baseball team did get their baseball games off on Thursday, but had to switch locations and going to Rose Hill because Hibbs-Hooten Field was too wet.

It turned out to be a pretty good afternoon/evening as the home team Crusaders won on the road. 

In game one, Wellington won its first game of the season, a 6-1 victory over Rose Hill. In the second contest. Wellington won 8-3 to improve to 2-4.

Gage Cunningham was the winning pitcher in the first contest, allowing six hits, one walk, while striking out six, with one earned run. Silas Popplewell finished the game striking out three in the final inning.

Crusaders opened a 5-0 lead in the first four innings, scoring a run in the first, three in the third and one in the fourth. Rose Hill’s lone run came in the fifth. Jack Nuss, Cade Fairbanks, and Popplewell all doubled in the game.

In game two, Matthew Rinehart pitched all seven innings striking out four while allowing five hits and two walks to lift Wellington to victory.

Wellington opened a 2-0 lead in the first and was up 6-0 after two, 7-0 after three, and 8-0 after four. Rose Hill did not score until the top of the seventh when it scored three. Nuss had 3RBIs in the game.

South Haven’s girls’ softball team fell to 2-2 after losing to Cedar Vale-Dexter 8-7 and 15-3 this week.

The Cardinals nearly pulled it off when Rachel Turek and Madison Smith both scored runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull the game within a run on a Brittney Byers double. But a pop-up fly ended the game.

The second game saw the Spartans take a 4-1 lead in the first and held a 7-3 advantage after two. It would go on to score eight more runs to run-rule South Haven in five innings.

The WHS boys tennis team traveled to Crestview Country Club. Kade Adams and John Long went 1-2 in No. 1 doubles to place sixth. Karstyn Gill and C. Rademacher finished 1-2 to place seventh in No. 2 doubles. Hunter Bryant finished seventh going 1-2 in No. 1 singles. Dakota Lynnes placed seventh, going 1-2 in No. 2 singles.

In Wellington Middle School tennis, the top six players participated in the 10 team Ark City Invitational.  Team scores are not available yet.  Individual placers are as follows: No. 1 Singles:  Jack Wright, fourth,  No. 1 Doubles:  Keaton Hartman and Banks Hinshaw, sixth place; No. 2 Singles:  Nate Farmer, sixth and No. 2 Doubles:  Colten Henning and Hudson Lawrence fourth place.
