67-year-old woman involved with high speed chase through Sumner County
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — It is not very often that a woman, who may be eligible for social security, gets involved in a high-speed car chase. But that was what happened yesterday morning.
A 67-year-old white female, whose name has not been released by authorities, was charged with fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, duty of driver, and hit and run property damage after a high-speed chase that started in south Sumner County, west of South Haven, and ended in Haysville.
According to a Sumner County Sheriff’s report, a deputy was dispatched to the area of 180th and Tyler Road concerning a suspicious vehicle, a white rental U-Haul van, parked on the roadway.
The deputy made contact with the driver, who stated she was headed to Oklahoma. During the contact, E911 informed the deputy that the vehicle was stolen from Omaha, Neb. The driver was told to exit the vehicle, but instead drove off leading deputies on a high-speed chase.
The driver drove north and east on U.S. 177 highway, entering South Haven at a high rate of speed. She then turned northbound on U.S. 81 Highway. Wellington officers deployed a set of stop sticks. The vehicle continued north through Wellington on U.S. 81 and struck a dog and vehicle in the 600 block of south U.S. 81 Highway, before striking two more signs on Vandenburg Ave. before leaving Wellington on U.S. 81 Highway north.
Sheriff deputies deployed more stop sticks three more times deflating all but one of its tires. The vehicle turned east on 71st Street then south on Hydraulic, where Kansas Highway Patrol took over the lead in the pursuit. The vehicle was approaching 79th Street when it drifted off the shoulder and rolled onto its top in the west ditch just north of 79th.
The driver was pulled from the vehicle and was not injured. She was transported to the Sumner County Detention Center.
