Sumner Newscow report — A 9-year-old passenger in a 2007 Chevy Tahoe was critically injured and transported to an undisclosed Wichita hospital after a two-car accident involving a Winfield school bus Thursday afternoon.

According to a Sumner County Sheriff report, a Winfield school bus containing middle school football players and their coaches was traveling westbound at 4:20 p.m. to Wellington to play a game at 5 p.m. at Sellers Park. At the intersection of U.S. 160 and Oliver (Dalton Road), a Tahoe driven by Emilio Silva, 28, of Arlington, Texas, failed to stop at the intersection and struck the school bus.

As a result of the collision, a 9-year-old was ejected from the back seat of the Tahoe and sustained injuries.  The Tahoe, which was southbound at the time of the accident, was destroyed.

No children on the school bus were injured. No charges have been filed at this time.

The Winfield students and staff were transferred to another school bus and transported back to Winfield Middle School. Coaches, staff and administration were on site and coordinated with the Sheriff and other authorities.

Wellington Activities Director Elly Johnson said the games would be made up, but no dates have been established.
