Sumner County Commissioner meeting notes: June 17 to June 18, 2024
Sumner County Report — The following are the official Sumner County Commissioner notes for June 17 and June 18:
June 17, 2024 – 9 a.m.
The Board of County Commissioners met in regular session in the Commission room of the Sumner County Courthouse. Those present were Chairman John Cooney, Commissioner Steve Warner and Commissioner Jim Newell. Also present was County Clerk Debra A. Norris.
The Commission reviewed and unanimously approved minutes of June 3 and 4. The Commission also amended minutes of June 19 and 20, 2023.
Assessment Clerk Jen Strickland discussed 2025 budget preparation and Revenue Neutral Rate (RNR) with the Commission.
At 10:02 a.m., upon unanimous vote, the Commission entered into executive session for 10 minutes with Information Technology Director Joe Buresh for non-elected personnel. At 10:12 a.m., the Commission reconvened in open session. Chairman Cooney advised no binding action was taken as a result of the executive session.
Appraiser Tyler White discussed replacing two worn out vehicles for the department. After discussion, the Commission authorized Appraiser White to find a favorable way to dispose of the vehicles. The Commission authorized the purchase of an updated vehicle, using equipment reserve funds.
County Treasurer Dannetta Cook provided to the Commission the amount disbursed from Kansas Star Casino for the month of May as $140,279.19.
County Advisor Jack Potucek provided additional general review and updates.
There being no further business, the Board of County Commissioners adjourned at 11:35 a.m.

June 18, 2024 – 9 a.m.
The Board of County Commissioners met in regular session in the Commission room of the Sumner County Courthouse. Those present were Chairman John Cooney, Commissioner Steve Warner and Commissioner Jim Newell. Also present was County Clerk Debra A. Norris.
County Appraiser Tyler White provided information on the newly purchased explorer for the department. Director White advised he asked a local dealership about purchasing locally, receiving no response. Due to being down two vehicles, the Commission declared this an emergency purchase, authorizing without multiple bids.
County Treasurer Dannetta Cook discussed the amortization schedule for the current and newly built wind farm.
E911 Director Marcie Bristor reported the department is currently full staff, effective July 1. Other discussion included costs of tower rent and radio upgrades with a possible new facility.
Emergency Management Director James Fair discussed departmental vehicles and the 2025 budget.
County Advisor Jack Potucek provided additional general review and updates.
The Commission reviewed and unanimously approved current year abatement orders for $6,834.75 and prior year abatement orders for $4,699.56.
There being no further business, the Board of County Commissioners adjourned at 11:43 a.m.
