Several counterfeit bills are circulating through Sumner County

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow – Heidi Theurer, Vice President at the Bank of Commerce in Wellington, said there have been four counterfeit $20 bills that have come through the bank in the past two weeks.

“That is highly unusual,” Theurer said. “We usually get one once in awhile, but this seems excessive.”

Sumner County area residents, especially businesses, need to keep on the lookout for these fake bills. Here are helpful tips when looking at money to make sure they are authentic (See attachment here: Know your money).

Most of all make sure to look for the watermark that is visible from either side when held to a light. Also, the number on the bottom right corner will shift different colors if you move it – going from green to a copper.

“The counterfeit bills are really poorly done,” Theurer said. “If you don’t see a shifting color with that number then it is probably fake.”

People can also purchase a counterfeit pen at a local Wal-Mart which will change a certain color if the bill is authentic or another way if it is fake.

She said the counterfeit bills coming through the bank so far have be $20 bills.

Theurer speculates that the number of counterfeit bills lately may mean they are being produced locally in the south-central area.

Wellington Area Chamber of Commerce Annarose White also has expressed caution.

“As we approach garage sale season, please be extra aware of this,” White said. “If you find counterfeit bills, alert the local law enforcement.”
